Here is a shot of Jesus Rivera, his Viking Dealer Gustavo Gonzalez of Performance Yachts, Captain Erik and Mate Mark in the cock pit of 42502 Kamelia. The boat is headed to its home port of South Padre Island, Texas.
My Way
The first Viking 52 Sport Yacht to hit the waters off Dubai has enjoyed a busy season. Saeed Almaktoum's Viking, My Way, wasted no time and has logged plenty of hours cruising and fishing.
Oh My Marlin Darlin
Mark Mathys recently took delivery of his Viking 70 Enclosed Bridge Skybridge Marlin Darlin in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The delivery was capped off with a christening toast and quickly the boat was underway at first light. Poor sea conditions encouraged a stop in Norfolk where the unusual sight of a Submarine inbound and then an aircraft carrier were both spotted. Then Marlin Darlin was visited by a whale just outside the harbor. In route for Wrightsville Beach, the Viking checked out a temperature break at the canyon off Cape Hatteras and sure enough, a 50 pound wahoo became the first fish caught aboard the new 70 with Mark Mathys in the chair. The crew of 13 plans to fish all the way south to Jacksonville.
Barracuda!
Ricardo Caridi boated some big barracudas recently! Ricardo and his crew were fishing his Viking 52 Sport Yacht, Tres 15, in Cartagena, Columbia when they found the sweet spot.

Texas Legends
A dismal weather forecast proved unfound and the 49 boat fleet participating in the 6th Annual Texas Legends Billfish Tournament enjoyed favorable sea conditions. As fishing began the first morning, it was obvious something extraordinary was happening with catch reports pouring in. When the smoke cleared on Day Two, over 150 billfish were reported in just a day and a half. Second place was awarded to Bert Steindorf’s Viking 74 Bandit with five white marlin and nine sailfish. Third place went to Kelly Owen and his team on the Viking 43 Caliente releasing one blue, three whites and seven sails.
Family Fun
Franciso Arias, owner of the Viking 64 Enclosed Bridge Chona, enjoyed his weekend to the fullest. Chona was home base for the Arias family in Panama on a family trip off Chapera Island, Las Perlas Archipielago. As shown in the pictures, there was no shortage of smiles.
Stately Visit
Viking’s Bill Healey (left) recently toured the facility with New Jersey’s Lt. Governor, Kim Guadagno (right) and representatives from the 9th Legislative District.
Viking Ocean Showdown
After an unscheduled lay day due to high winds offshore, the fleet of Vikings and Oceans headed to the canyons Friday to do battle. At stake: Bragging rights! The first day of fishing was a bit slow but Day 2 picked up with considerably more billfish release action. Later that day, it was over. When everyone’s catch was totaled, Team Viking emerged as the victor. According to tournament director, Bob Glover, “being a Viking and Ocean Yachts dealer, and having the two factories just up the road really gives us a unique opportunity to get friends and families together and have some great dockside fun and friendly competition offshore. Just having the Healey and Leek families bar-b-que steaks for their customers at our lay day pool party is alone worth the price of admission! The whole event is just a fun, fun time!”
Crossing Ts and Dotting Is
Every detail matters as John Stephano (left) and Wilber Blanco (right) finish quality control checks on a Viking 60 Convertible before the yacht leaves the factory.
Atlantis on Top
Jorge Jurado is at it again! Two weeks ago Jorge and his crew on his Viking 60 Atlantis entered the George F. Novey, Jr. International Fishing Tournament and walked away with all the marbles. The two day event on Isla San Jose in Las Perlas, Panama had a fleet of 60 boats all vying to be awarded Top Boat. The team on Atlantis landed a bounty of yellowfin, wahoo, mackerel, snapper, amber jack and jack to capture the coveted Top Boat title.

Tudo Fish!
The Viking 48 Tudo Fish took the prestigious title of Top Boat at the recent Lobito Big Game Fishing Tournament. Jan Jongschaap and his crew about Tudo Fish also claimed Top Fisherman and Top Release team. The tournament is fished 240 miles south of Luanda, Angola.
Great First Trip
Peter Feld didn’t wait to get home to Montauk to start fishing with his new Viking 48 Convertible, Blondie, after taking delivery from South Jersey Yacht Sales’ Drew Santoro. Instead, after clearing New Jersey’s Manasquan Inlet, he headed for some warm water in the Dip, a curve in the Continental Shelf that rapidly drops off at the 100 fathom curve into more than 2,000 feet, some 110 miles northeast from Manasquan and slightly inshore from Block Canyon. Peter, Tony Corrao and Chris Spies started trolling and quickly raised and released a beautifully colored white marlin on a Green Machine, for a blue water billfish christening. Congratulations to Peter and team Blondie! (Left to right, Peter Feld, Tony Corrao, with Chris Spies snapping the picture.)

Powering Up
A Viking electrical technician puts the final touches into an AC panel going aboard a new Viking 50 Convertible under construction. Every Viking has custom made panels and harnesses built in our electrical shop.
Strength from the Bottom Up
Viking keels are filled with a mixture of silica sand and resin that hardens into a solid mass reinforcing the area to protect the hull in the event of an accidental grounding or hitting a submerged object. Here a Viking worker sprays resin into the tray of sand, which will then be thoroughly mixed and applied into the keel area.
The Viking 66 Convertible
Daily progress is fact of life in the development of the new 66 Convertible, which launches in late summer.
A Fuelish Leprechaun
Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the Healey family and the Viking Yacht Company!

Sanding between each layer of fiberglass in preparation of the next laminate is a time consuming yet standard procedure in the lay-up process of a Viking yacht like this 70 Convertible.
Homeward Bound
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mattlin recently took delivery of their new Viking 42 Open, Sue’s Seabee at the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, and is shown here heading out to their homeport in Stuart, Florida. Nature’s Palette
Colorful yellow-eye snapper create an amazing portrait, as well as the catch-of-the-day aboard Elfina III, a Viking 70 Enclosed Bridge Convertible. Captain Tim Hyde found the fish off Ragged Island in the southern Bahamas.
Fresh Breeze
Opening your bow hatch on sunny, breezy days when the boat is tied to the dock is a good way to help dry the anchor line and prevent mildew and musty odors. A better technique is to periodically remove the anchor line and wipe out dirt and salt residue. Don’t forget to secure the bitter end inside the locker when replacing the rode.
Blue Ice
The weather outside may be frightful but Viking is still open. Please be patient if the phone does not answer on the first ring as some Viking staff are navigating some slippery roads.
Neither Snow nor Ice
Nothing stands in the way of a new Viking being delivered. Early one morning late last week, the first Viking 42 Open left the factory on a flat bed truck for its premiere February 4 – 5, 2011 at the Viking VIP Miami Boat Show Preview at the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida. Invitations are in the mail, or call your Viking dealer for more details.

Ready for a Sails Meeting
Just in time for the beginning of the winter sailfish season in Palm Beach, the newest Krazy Salt’s, a 70 Viking Convertible leaves the Viking International Yachting Center sporting its custom teak cockpit and spectacular teak transom with its signature “seasoned” blue marlin. Catch em up, boys!
Another Sunset in the Exumas
Capt. Tim Hyde sent this spectacular image of a 70 Enclosed Bridge Convertible anchored in an Exuma cove one evening on a stopover enroute for an extended cruise in the southern Bahamas chain.
High Tide on the Bass River
Several days of northeast onshore winds have created prevalent high tides backing up much of the water of the Great Bay into the Bass River. A recent photo shows a Viking 82 convertible with the water level near the top of the Travelift well. The dock closest to the 82 C is a fixed pier with the water within inches of spilling over the top. Had this period been during a full moon, the Travelift well and the docks would be under water.
A Viking Morning
Captain Tim Hyde, skipper of a new Viking 70 Convertible, captured dawn at the Viking Yacht Service Center recently. Capt. Hyde is also renowned for catching fish, which he is doing right now in the Bahamas. Catch 'em up, Cappy!
Another Day at the Viking Yacht Service Center
Viking’s two service yards in Riviera Beach, Florida, are the go-to places in the Palm Beach area for routine maintenance, expert mechanical, electrical and refrigeration repairs, warranty service, renovations, as well as updates by Palm Beach Towers and Atlantic Marine Electronics. Both yards handle Viking yachts, and other boat manufacturers by appointment. Next time you are in the area, stop in and say hello.
Another Viking 82 Gets Closer to Delivery
Installing a Palm Beach Towers’ tuna tower is the crowning touch for a new Viking 82 Enclosed Bridge Convertible at our New Gretna, New Jersey facility on the Bass River.
Raising Fish
Felipe Mendoza brought in some big fish on his Viking 48 Guerrero Azteca. The crew was fishing in Puerto Vallarta when they boated a 618 pound black marlin and 230 pound yellow fin.
Quick Draw in Key West
Randy and Kim Prock proudly took delivery of 52629, Quick Draw, and then enjoyed a weekend in Key West on their maiden voyage. They were joined by their loyal first mates Lucy and Roxy.
Down to the Wire
Steve Lange, a senior tech from Atlantic Marine Electronics attentively threads a coaxial cable for the antenna through the hardtop of the new Viking 42 Convertible where it will connect with the VHF in the radio box at the helm. Using AME, a sister company of Viking, for the yacht’s electronic needs ensures the 42 Convertible will be delivered turnkey ready to fish and cruise.
Just Add Water
A new Viking 70 Enclosed Bridge Convertible gets closer to start up time when the engines are commissioned and every onboard system is operated and checked before final inspections and delivery.
Big Game, Big Sweep
For the second year in a row, Jim Douglas and the crew on his Viking 68 Reel Attitude swept the awards for the Corpus Christi Big Game Fishing Club. Reel Attitude won Top Boat and Club Champion. JR Douglas took Top Angler, 1st Sailfish, 1st White Marlin, 2nd Blue Marlin and 2nd Blackfin Tuna. Angler John Price claimed 2nd Swordfish.
Viking 42 Heads to Sea
On a foggy morning, the engineering group takes the new Viking 42 Convertible out for a sea trial.
Premium Finish
Spraying multiple coats of superior quality polyurethane paint assures long lasting service at the critical waterline area of a new Viking. Extensive and artful masking delivers sharp edged striping.
Do You Dream in Blue?
Blue has sure been a popular choice on new Vikings with colorful names like Atlantic Blue, Bahama Blue, Sky Blue, and even this Custom Blue as seen on the new Viking 70 demo. A flavor for every taste, we also have built boats in shades of yellow and pastel greens in addition to the standard snow white.
Viking Dealer Days
Viking Yachts’ annual dealer meeting is taking place this week and representatives from the domestic and international networks are visiting the plant and getting acquainted with two new models being launched for the 2011 model year. Shown here, a group of dealers are acclimating themselves with the new Viking 70, which will premiere at the upcoming fall boat shows.
Good Morning, From Viking!
A brand new Viking 76 Convertible paints a beautiful picture on a lovely late summer morning as the yacht leaves the New Gretna facility heading toward Atlantic City and delivery to its owner. After its arrival in Florida in about four days, the yacht will receive final detailing, including a tuna tower and electronics.
Zeus Drive Close Up
As the new Viking 42 Convertible moves toward the end of the production line and closer to the water, a team of Viking shipwrights examine the trim tab mechanism of the yacht’s starboard Cummins powered Zeus pod drive.
Time for Heavy Lifting
It takes some major equipment to move a Viking 76 Convertible on land, but we certainly have the machinery to get the job done. Here is one of our 150-ton Travelifts in action, ferrying a new 76 Convertible from the production line.
It's electric!
Every Viking Yacht is built with a customized power harness designed in our electrical shop. In addition, dozens of electrical components are assembled on a daily basis for each yacht including (left) a fuel gauge panel and (right) an A.C. panel.
Vikings Wave the Flags
The Viking 64 Judge returns to port after a day offshore releasing 12 white marlin during the recent Mid-Atlantic $500,000 Tournament in Cape May, New Jersey. At the tournament's end, Judge was the top release boat with 21 white marlin.
Over The Top
A good day at the Mid-Atlantic $500,000, as the Over the Top returns to the dock waving four white marlin release flags.
Shine on Brightly
Reflections as deep as the sea clearly demonstrate the depth of the shine on this new Viking 70 Convertible as it reaches the end of the production line in anticipation of initial sea trials.
Big Blue
The 37th Annual White Marlin Open was held August 2-6 in Ocean City, Maryland. 255 boats and over 1800 anglers competed. 230 boats fished on Day Two but when the scales opened at 4pm, James Kontos’ Viking 65 Let it Ride was waiting to weigh a huge blue marlin. That blue, fought by James’ son John, weighed in at an amazing 1010.5 pounds. The fish was the second largest blue in White Marlin Open history and only the second grander to be caught off of Ocean City. Needless to say, Let it Ride took the First Place Marlin title and James was the Second Place Angler.
Viking 42 C Update
The Viking 42 Convertible is progressing rapidly down the production line and coming together quite nicely. The flying bridge has been installed and the interior is seeing gains daily. As both side views indicate, the window lines and the profile bear the unmistakable look of a modern Viking. By the end of the month, the Viking 42 Convertible will be in the water for its engineering and mechanical start ups, and initial sea trials on the Bass River.
Alexis Releases
Charles Barker's Viking 82 Alexis took Third Place in the Virginia Beach Invitational Marlin Tournament. With Captain Andy Morris at the helm, Alexis released seven white marlin to claim their spot on the leaderboard.
Viking 70 is Outward Bound
The new Viking 70 Convertible is testing the waters at the Ocean City, Maryland, White Marlin Open this week. Following this prestigious tournament, the Viking 70 will head south for the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament in Manteo, North Carolina.
Final Touches for the Viking 70 Convertible
Seven months ago work began on Viking’s newest model, as the 70 Convertible went from thousands of computer screen drawings to the actual construction phase. Over the next few months every department in our 810,000 square foot factory focused on building the parts that would be used in creating a blue-water tournament contender. Built in America with pride and passion, the results speak for themselves. Yesterday morning Viking’s in-house photographer and videographer, Adam Beneciuk, was busy collecting images in between final detailing by Viking’s make ready crew. There’s no doubt that the Viking 70 is another home run considering the next six already have owners in waiting.
Attention to Details
In addition to electronic stowage in the helm console, the new Viking 70 Convertible also utilizes space in the hardtop for additional equipment. Here a technician from Atlantic Marine Electronics installs the face plate for the yacht’s auto-pilot system. The Viking 70, the company’s newest demo, leaves soon for the summer tournament circuit with stops in Ocean City, Maryland, Pirate’s Cove, North Carolina, and finally Cape May, New Jersey, for the Mid-Atlantic $500,000.
Leaving the Nest
With its antennas pointing forward and the hull secure in the Travelift, it is clear the new Viking 70 Convertible is headed toward the water. After completing its initial engineering sea trials a few weeks ago, the first 70 Convertible returned to the building for completion and final detailing, including the installation of its Atlantic Marine Electronic navigation and entertainment equipment. The Viking 70 will serve as the company’s demonstrator for the summer tournament season, beginning with the 37th Annual White Marlin Open, August 2-6, 2010 in Ocean City, Maryland. Viking has six additional 70 Convertibles under contract.
Welcome to the Family
Mr. James Lee and his beautiful family are all smiles as they take a break aboard their Viking 52, Reel Arbaitrage, while the yacht was spending quality time at the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida. Several custom projects were completed including the addition of a bow thruster, enlarged bait wells and tuna tubes, rod stowage, and new LED interior and exterior lighting. Palm Beach Towers modified the tuna tower and bow rail to West Coast Bad Company style, while Atlantic Marine Electronics added navigational upgrades, as well as a home theater system. The Lee family will use Mexico’s Puerta Vallarta as their home base and plan to join the tournament circuits fishing from Panama to Cabo San Lucas.
Vikings Victorious
The “War Offshore,” locally known as the 21st Annual Viking Ocean Showdown, was held at the Canyon Club Marina in Cape May, New Jersey, with Team Viking taking the honors and bragging rights for the year. According to Viking’s team captain, Pat Healey, “This is a one-of-a-kind event that is always a lot of fun because it allows us to spend quality time with our owners. Of course we take the fishing seriously, but in the end it’s a great way to get together and enjoy the social aspect of our sport as well.”
Beneath the Surface
While Vikings are known for their rakish good looks and artful styling, what’s beneath the surface is rugged beauty. Laying up a hull, for example, requires skilled craftsmanship as shown here. In addition, every lamination is fully sanded before the next fiberglass layer is applied to ensure optimal bonding and strength, which provides outstanding quality, Viking’s hallmark for over 46 years.
Bringing the Horses to the Water
Viking tech, Mike Capaldi, steers 2,600 horsepower to the production line. The MTU V16 Series 2000 M94 diesel is one of two that will be used to power a Viking 82 Convertible under construction.
Rapid Transit
The new Viking 70 Convertible ripped to a top speed of 43 knots during initial sea trials last week. Powered with twin MTU V16 Series 2000 M94 engines, look for this new Viking at the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland, August 2-6, 2010.
Ladies and Gentlemen, We Present the New Viking 42 Convertible
Hull number 1 of the new Viking 42 Series has left the mold and is on its way to the production line. The first 42 will be a convertible and will soon be joined by the 42 Open. Both versions will feature Cummins Zeus pod-drive systems. Look for the new Viking 42 Convertible at the upcoming fall boat shows.
Malaysian Sunset
A wish you were here moment, Tim Day sent us this fabulous sunset photographed from his 56 Viking while cruising in Malaysia.
Down to the Nitty Gritty
Congratulations to Peter Dornau who was the first respondent to correctly identify the mystery image as the silica sand that is mixed with resin and ceramic spheres to fill the keel area of a Viking for brute strength and impact resistance. Peter receives a nifty Viking T-shirt along with our random winner Matthew E. Hinkle. Congratulations to the winners and thank you for all the great responses. We look forward to your participation in identifying the next Viking mystery part…coming soon!
And the Color is Seafoam Green
Another Viking 70 Convertible, this one 70706, is pulled from its hull mold. Featuring a very custom Seafoam Green color, this Viking is going to a customer who will fish off the northwest coast of Africa.
Vikings Win at Treasure Cay Tournament
Bet-A-Buc, a Viking 60 Convertible owned by Betty and Buck Autry landed a 582 pound blue marlin at the 27th Annual Treasure Cay Billfish Tournament. The fish was caught by angler Chuck Stowe. Kilowett, a Viking 48 Convertible took First Place Overall, as Lisa Flack released two blues and a white marlin also earning her Top Female Angler honors. Aboard the Viking 55 Convertible Midnight Blue, angler Eddie Lopez caught a 33.5 pound wahoo to take this division.
Viking’s Globe Trotters
Viking’s international network of established dealers covers the globe and works hard to promote the Viking lifestyle. Recently, Higinio Aldaz (left) from the White Shark Group, Viking’s dealer in Madrid, Spain, visited Eduardo Read (right), Viking’s representative in the Dominican Republic to discuss fishing and cruising opportunities afforded by Viking’s 42 to 82 feet product line.
What Is It?
Here is your opportunity to tell us how much you know about Viking Yachts. The first person who correctly identifies this component used aboard Vikings and emails the answer to marketing@vikingyachts.com will soon be wearing a nifty Viking Yachts T-shirt. Good luck!
Black Bandit
Bandit, a Viking 74 Convertible recently spent time at the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida, and among its list of upgrades and renovations was a spectacular paint job. Shown here with its gleaming black hull, Bandit navigates the turning basin as it heads out Palm Beach Inlet.
One at a time
Each Viking we build from 42 to 82 feet is as individual as the owner. Not only do we build to the exact requirements of the owner, but we also can deliver the yacht turnkey ready using our extensive in-house design and manufacturing resources, as well as vendor relationships. A good example is this 57 Convertible being outfitted with custom teak decking and cover boards.
In the Belly of the Beast
Viking’s new 42-footers, the 42 Convertible and 42 Open will share the same hull with two distinctive decks plans and interior layouts. Here, a pair of Viking shipwrights inside the hull mold are prepping for the first hull of the 42 Convertible to be laid up. Note the raised boss to the left of the workers where the Cummins Zeus pod-drive will be installed.
It’s That Time of the Season
Like clockwork, the new Viking 70 Convertible 70701 came down the production line without a hitch. While under construction, Palm Beach Towers was busy fabricating its tuna tower. After the boat was launched on Thursday in the basin, it came out on Friday for the tower installation. Shown here, the boat is back in the building for tower detailing, Atlantic Marine Electronics navigation equipment installations and the final punch list before it begins its engineering sea trials later this month.
Our Plate is Full!
Like water over the transom, 85 replies poured in with answers to identify our mystery Viking part. Congratulations to Chris Squeri who was first to correctly peg the part as an engine mount shim. Chris will receive a cool Viking T-shirt for his efforts, while John Brema is our random drawing winner. Our next mystery part will be emailed, and shown here in our Shot of the Day section on, so be sure to check your mail and the web site regularly. Thanks to all who participated.
Work of Art
Viking Yachts has long been recognized for its vertical integration, which means that 90 percent of what goes into a Viking is made at Viking, including the molds for all of our boats from 42 to 82 feet. Here is a finished deck plug for the new Viking 42 Open, which was cut on our $1 million five-axis profiling machine. This one-piece plug stretches more than 46 feet from the pulpit to the transom coaming and will be used to create a flawless mold to build the deck assembly. The Viking 42 Open will be powered with twin Cummins Zeus pod-drives and will be featured at the 2011 Viking VIP Miami Boat Show Preview in February at the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida, with a world premiere later that month at the 2011 Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show.

Clean Machine
It’s a flurry of activity aboard Viking 70703, hull number three in the new 70 series as the salon floor and interior modules are put in place. Here you also can see a pair of fiberglass showers stalls waiting to be installed. In front of 70703 is hull number two wearing its deckhouse, while at the front of the line is 70701, which will be the Viking demo, Viking 70 when it launches mid-summer.
Viking 76603 Is On the Move
Deliveries continue as regular as the tide at Viking as 76603 leaves the New Gretna facility for a long-time owner, late last week. This Enclosed Bridge Convertible has a number of custom features including a pair of 2,600 mhp MTU V16 Series 2000 M94 engines, a Seekeeper Gyro Stabilizer underneath the cockpit sole, teak decks and mezzanine, hydraulic outriggers, a spectacular sky bridge and more than three dozen rod holders. Look for On The Edge in the northeast canyons this summer and fall.
Talking About Wiring
Many Vikings are used to fish around the world for big-game like marlin and tuna. During the battle, the wire man in the cockpit is responsible for holding on to the leader and bringing the fish to the boat for its release. At Viking, we also have wire men, like this skilled tech installing wiring runs aboard a new Viking 70 Convertible. One of the many elements that separates Viking from other builders is that we design and fabricate the wiring harness for every boat in our electrical shop. When completed, the yacht will carry over 1,800 pounds of tinned wiring to power and operate as many as 300 onboard systems.
And the Answer is...
Dozens of responses poured in over the past week in reference to our Viking Mystery Part, but not one was correct in describing the part as a bow thruster grate, shown here. But we are still keeping our part of the bargain and chose a Viking T-shirt winner ar random. Congratulations to Bill Coey and Peter Torchio.
San Blas Islands Anchorage
The Viking 82 Enclosed Bridge Convertible with a Sky Bridge, Monica, makes for a picturesque scene anchored in a small cove in San Blas Archipelago, on the Caribbean coast of Panama. This group of 378 islands, of which 49 are inhabited by the Kuna Indians, is surrounded by reefs that make for excellent snorkeling and swimming. Wish we were there!
Quality in the Eye of the Beholder
Building a Viking 76 Convertible takes time and effort to be sure, but hundreds of hours are also spent on quality control. From the obvious like the fit and finish of the teak joinery to the obscure reaches beneath bunks and lockers, a skilled Viking gives a discerning eye to ensure customer satisfaction.
Viking Parts Department: We’re Always Open
Viking prides itself on its enormous parts department, which also features many proprietary items we manufacture in-house exclusively for our boats. Here’s an example of a part found aboard Viking Yachts. Guess what it is and you could win a Viking T-shirt, if you are the first to correctly do so. Big Marlin in Panama
The owner of the Viking 54 Bad Company Edition, My Way, shows great form battling a monster marlin while fishing the Hannibal Bank, off the coast of Panama in the Pacific Ocean. Team My Way spent 30 days fishing the Bank and loaded up with tuna and other pelagic species, but the real adrenaline rush came complements of the six hooked and released 500 plus pound marlin.
Fast Boat to India
Viking’s dealer in India, West Coast Marine Yacht Services, PVT, based in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, has delivered its first Viking 56 Enclosed Bridge Convertible, shown here awaiting permission to enter the local marina. After leaving the Viking plant, the 56 EB traveled to the port of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. From there it was loaded onto a ship, which traveled 9,271 nautical miles bound for Genoa, Italy, and from there to Mumbai. This is the first Viking to sail Indian waters and will be fishing the Andaman Islands on the eastern side of the Bay of Bengal.
Hurry Up Men, But Get it Right!
As delivery day approaches for a new Viking 76 Enclosed Bridge Convertible, it’s a relentless flurry of activity. But the combination of machinery and manpower, along with Viking’s industry famous commitment to “Build a better boat everyday” means this new Viking will exceed its owner’s expectations when it leaves the Viking facility on the Bass River.
Viking Installs First Seakeeper Gyro Stabilizer
Viking senior engineer, Bill Gibbons (left) and Seakeeper’s Brian Steele (right) prepare for initial sea trials aboard a new Viking 76 Enclosed Bridge Convertible equipped with a Seakeeper M-21000 gyro stabilizer. This is Viking’s first installation of the Seakeeper M-21000 unit, which is designed to reduce rolling motion under way and at anchor. Unlike external fin-type stabilizers, which create drag and are vulnerable to groundings or collisions with submerged debris, the Seakeeper nests neatly and is fully protected in the yacht’s commodious lazarette.
Look Out Fish: I Know What You’re Eating!
Installation is key when installing deep-water fish finders and the craftwork of Viking’s sister company Atlantic Marine Electronics is obvious here. The wedge fitted to the bottom of this Viking 76 Convertible surrounds the transducer and allows clean water to pass over the face of it to paint a clear picture on the display screen on the bridge.
Where Vikings Roam
The Viking 74 Minute Man, traverses west bound in the Corinth Canal, a four-mile long cut that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea and separates the Greek mainland from the Peloponnesian peninsula. Built in the late 19th century, the canal is 68 feet wide and has an average depth of 26 feet. Some 11,000 tourist ships ply the cut each year.
Taming the Roll
Viking recently installed a Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilizer in the lazarette of a new Viking 76 Convertible for an owner who spends a lot of time fishing the Northeast canyons for tuna, marlin and swordfish. The stabilizer eliminates much of the rolling motion encountered in beam seas both at anchor and underway.
Viking 42 Open is Taking Shape
Viking currently has four new models under construction, including the 70 Open Bridge Convertible, the 70 Enclosed Bridge Convertible, the 42 Convertible and the 42 Open. Here is the deck plug for the 42 Open as it is being shaped by one of our two $1 million five-axis computer programmed milling machines. In a matter of days, the plug will resemble the one-piece deck assembly from its pulpit to the transom. Although early on in its production, you can easily see the beginning of the cockpit and command deck areas taking shape.
Time Marches On
Proof that change is constant the last Shot of the Day featured a beautiful 32 year old Viking 35 Convertible. This morning a brand new Viking 76 Enclosed Bridge left New Gretna headed toward Atlantic City for delivery to its new owner. Viking is celebrating its 46th year of continuous operation.
Classic Memories
Mr. Rex Lewis recently sent us this wonderful photo of his fully restored 1978 35-foot Viking Convertible, which he uses on Sebago Lake in Maine. Mr. Lewis spent three years refurbishing his classic Viking and says, “It’s a great boat that has provided my family and many friends with unforgettable cruises. Thanks for building such a quality product.”
The Lid Goes On
Viking is making excellent headway in its latest model, the new 70 Convertible, as the deckhouse joins the hull. By using Viking’s $1 million five-axis profiler milling machine to produce the plug that created the mold, the deckhouse is a single piece structure that blends form and function virtually seamlessly. Much of the new yacht’s interior modules have been installed and visible progress can be seen everyday. The Viking 70 will launch in time to catch up with the late summer tournament circuit. Watch out fish, here comes another Viking!
Blue on Blue
Before joining the production line, hull number one of the new Viking 70 Convertible receives two coats of ablative/copolymer Interlux Micron CSC with an Interlux Interprotect epoxy primer.
Step this Way
Work is moving along splendidly aboard the new Viking 70 Convertible, which launches later this summer. Here, we have Viking’s Scott Cowling and Rudy Dalinger fitting the stairway that leads from the yacht’s salon to the companionway and sleeping accommodations below.
A Good Day of Fishing
Tim Malley, of Connecticut was high bidder for a day of fishing aboard the Viking demo. The trip was offered at a benefit auction for outdoor writer and television host Tred Barta arranged by Len Belcaro of the Big Game Fishing Journal. Tim and his buddies caught fish, had fun and most importantly contributed to a worthy cause. (Left to right) Tim Malley, Peter Oplaka, Neal Berko, Emory Shawver.
Lovely Shades of the Bahamas
Charlie Barker aboard his new Viking 82, Alexis, idles toward the 157 foot Christensen Nice N Easy, owned by good friend John Rosatti, who also owns a Viking 74 Convertible, as they cruise the waters of Green Cay, Bahamas, just nIrth of Rose Island and east of Paradise Island.
The Hits Keep Coming
Here’s a look at the snow white hull of 70702 as it is pulled from its mold Wednesday afternoon. This is the second hull of the new 70 series and like hulls one and three will have an Open Bridge configuration. Hull number four is slated as the first Enclosed Bridge 70 Convertible. Both versions will be showcased in the Viking display at the upcoming 2010 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in October.
Viking 70 is Moving Up the Line
With the fiberglass encapsulated stringers and bulkheads, fuel, water and waste tanks installed, the first hull of the new Viking 70 Convertible series moves from egg crating and heads toward first stage mechanical and electrical. Over the next 10 days, the yacht will receive its wiring for standard and optional equipment, and the running gear, engines and generator will be installed.
One Big Boat!
A just launched Viking 82 Convertible strikes a pose at the make ready dock awaiting the arrival of its owner. Viking Zeus Project Making Headway
Engineers, naval architects and sales representatives from Cummins MerCruiser Diesel visited Viking recently to meet with our engineering and sales team concerning the CMD Zeus pod propulsion system, which will be standard on the new Viking 42 Convertible and Viking 42 Open. The Viking 42 Convertible will premiere at the 2010 Norwalk International Boat Show in September, while the 42 Open is slated to be introduced at the Viking 2011 VIP Miami Boat Show Preview at our Riviera Beach, Florida, facility.
The Viking Difference
Viking applies an epoxy barrier coat to the entire hull skin of every yacht to resist blistering, as shown aboard a new 60 Convertible getting ready to join the production line.
It All Starts at the Beginning
Quality yacht construction doesn’t happen by accident and every step along the way from the very first day is critical. When a Viking hull is pulled from its mold a cradle is waiting to support it throughout its entire build process until the yacht is ready to leave the building. This ensures the hull remains true and fair. In the foreground, a cradle for an 82 Convertible is standing by for the next hull. In the background, that’s a 76 Convertible waiting its turn to get on the production line.
Glorious Day
Captain Anthony Torre of the Viking 65 Convertible Mercedes sent along this striking image of the yacht as it approaches Cabo San Lucas. The light, the water, and the mountain cast a beautiful reflection in the yacht’s starboard side and salon window. Wish we were there!
Rock Solid Construction
An example of Viking’s peerless attention to detail, even in places most people rarely see, is this 3/8-inch aluminum backing plate for the 12-inch through-bolted stern cleat aboard the Viking 50 Convertible. The white material around the periphery of the plate is 3m 5200 adhesive sealant.
The Viking 70 is Coming to Life
The new Viking 70 Convertible project is speeding along. Here is the deckhouse mold being tuned up and made ready for lamination, which begins shortly. Note the pulpit is an integral part of the one-piece mold from bow to stern. The new model launches this summer.
Like Father, Like Sons
Three generations of Viking Yachts’ Healey family were on hand at the recently concluded Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show earlier this month. Viking president and co-founder, Bill Healey was an excellent teacher for Patrick. who currently runs the day-to-day operations. Patrick’s sons Sean and Justin are sure to follow in their father’s footsteps in yacht building. (Left to right) Pat Healey, Sean Healey, Bill Healey Justin Healey.

Get Lit
In case you haven’t already noticed Peter Miller of the “Get Lit” fishing team, a frequent player in the Winner’s Circle at major tournaments, including first place last April at the prestigious World Sailfish Championship in Key West, Florida, his Viking 52 Convertible certainly should get your attention. Wrapped in custom hull graphics the “Get Lit” also serves as a test bench for OceanLED underwater lighting systems.

Making Bait
John Brownlee, Editor-in-Chief of the highly regarded marine journal, Salt Water Sportsman, sent us this surreal image taken one morning last week of a pair of Vikings making bait on Davis Reef off Islamorada, Florida, during the Islamorada Sailfly Tournament.
Building a Better Boat Everyday
Viking’s ability to design and produce new models is legendary, thanks to the company’s vertical integration that allows us design and manufacture the plugs and molds in our 810,000 square foot facility. Here are two examples. In the background, is the deckhouse plug for the new Viking 42 Convertible? In the foreground, you are looking at the plug for the cockpit coaming that will be used to manufacture the fiberglass part of the new Viking 70 Convertible. Our pair of computer operated five-axis milling machines allow us to design parts with unerring accuracy including such details as the transom fish box. Look for the new 70 Convertible and 42 Convertible to launch for the 2011 model year.
Private Island
Viking owner Tim Day enjoyed a secluded day off Pulau Aur, which is the Indonesian way to say Island Aur. Pulau Aur is 136 miles east north east of Singapore. Tim's Viking 56, Reel Torque, spent a few peaceful days here in the South China Sea.
Viking’s Antidote for the Winter Blues!
The Bass River may be freezing in January with outside temperatures in the low 20s, but the ovens are on and we’re cooking with gas at the Viking Yacht Company. Shown here is the brand new hull mold for our latest project, the Viking 70 Convertible. Those familiar with Viking’s design and engineering teams know that when we announce a new model, it’s new from the keel up and here’s the proof.
Ice Alert!
Prevailing winds from the blustery Arctic Clipper have tumbled nighttime air temperatures into the low teens the past few days creating iced-in conditions in the basin at the Viking Yacht Company manufacturing facility on the Bass River. Although a series of submerged bubbling machines to circulate warmer bottom water to the surface are in use, they are unable to keep up with the freezing temperatures, and more cold weather is ahead. The good news is the 2010 Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show is slated for next month and we hope to see you there.
Birthday Catch

This year Viking employees collected a sleigh full of toys, which were distributed to 24 Viking families to help spread joy to their children. In addition, $3,700 was collected and then matched by the Viking Yacht Company and used to purchase gift cards from local merchants for food and other necessities. In the spirit of the season, we wish everyone happy holidays and all that is good in New Year.
