When the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida, opened in 2002, the plan was simple. Knowing that 70 percent of Viking Yacht owners pass through the Palm Beach area in the course of a year, we felt the time was ripe to provide our owners with a convenient location featuring every modern amenity a boat owner might need to maintain the yacht in Bristol fashion. Additionally, we wanted to have a central location for Viking warranty work, and above all deliver a level of service that made the boatyard experience a pleasurable one.
We also knew that it would take more than talk or a name change to bring our vision to fruition. So, after purchasing the Old Slip Marina, we set about turning the idea into reality. To make it happen, new floating docks were installed, a new 150-ton Travelift was purchased and a 125-foot by 150-foot open end building with 50 feet of overhead clearance for tower boats was built. A three-story building also was constructed with service bays and office space. The response was immediate and the yard quickly gained a reputation for its excellent service and commitment to owner satisfaction. With sister companies, Atlantic Marine Electronics and Palm Beach Towers on the premises, the Viking Service Center became a one-stop solution for routine maintenance, engine and generator overhauls, major renovations, mechanical, carpentry, fiberglass and electrical reparations. With our skilled shipwrights and Viking trained technicians we could serve our owners the best way we knew how: the Viking way.
The new 70 enjoys a familial resemblance to its siblings the Viking 82 and Viking 76. The aggressively raked stem featuring better than eight feet of freeboard forward is designed to make small work out of those big head seas typically encountered offshore when hunting marlin.
Likewise, the freeboard is a subtle indication of the significant headroom beneath the flush foredeck. The sheer line is pure sweetness that tapers aft to three-feet of freeboard in the cockpit for ease of releasing and tagging billfish.
A black metallic mask wraps around the front of the deckhouse seamlessly transitioning into the dark tinted windows that terminate in teardrop fashion. The distinguished profile is further honed with molded in feature lines intercepting the curvy smoothness of the flying bridge and deckhouse.
Curves also highlight and accentuate the 208 square-foot cockpit with its observation mezzanine that provides ample stowage, multiple freezers, an insulated refrigerated drink box in the salon entrance step, plenty of drawers, and engineroom access. The lower cockpit provides a sizeable fish box, a stowage compartment and an available live well beneath the molded nonslip sole. A transom fish box/live well also is available.
Viking revolutionized the flying bridge layout of modern production convertible yachts with its signature tournament proven center console helm, which delivers acute visibility to each point of the compass. The 70 Convertible helm exemplifies its superiority with comfort, utility and beauty. Three adjustable Murray Products helm seats with teak ladder backs are standard. Additional seating is provided with port and starboard lounges each with rod stowage below and aft facing jump seats. Ahead of the command console is a third lounge, as well as a sink, freezer and drink box cooler. Electronics stow neatly never more than a glance away and safely protected from rain and spray in any type of weather.
The salon is immense, inviting and elaborately appointed with designer furnishings, window treatments and custom valances. Overhead LED lighting sets the mood while natural light streams in from the salon sides and aft bulkhead windows. A day head is strategically located for convenience. Fishing rods and other gear stows handily and are readily accessible beneath the L-shape sofa to starboard. The sofa faces the entertainment center to port with a 50-inch flat screen television and Bose Lifestyle 48 system with custom surround sound. A Moritz OctoPlex screen monitor manages electrical needs at the touch of a finger in the salon and also from the helm on the flying bridge.
The galley island features a granite counter, under counter refrigeration, three bar stools and is adjacent to the dinette that seats four. Forward, the galley offers the convenience of world class appliances, a walk-in pantry, plus multiple drawer and locker stowage.
Below, the four-stateroom, four-head layout utilizes space for maximum comfort and privacy, including a most spacious master suite and private access to the crew quarters via the engineroom and cockpit. A five-stateroom version also is available.
Like the most recent Vikings, the new 70 shares a refined running surface with a convex deadrise shape with sharpened waterline sections to showcase stability and sea keeping ability. The convex deadrise adds curvature and form to the hull bottom and the wide beam, which carries well aft. In addition to supplying considerable buoyancy and lift, re-entry at flank speeds will be soft enhancing a comfortable dry ride.
To intensify performance and achieve better engine and propulsion efficiencies, Viking’s design, engineering and production teams explored various avenues to shave off unnecessary poundage to bring the deckhouse and hull weights to the desired parameters. Viking has been using end grain balsa as a core material for better than 24 years without a single construction failure. Our confidence in this material led us to explore other areas where we could take advantage of the product’s various attributes for stiffness, strength, lighter weight and durability in the development of the 70 Convertible. Some examples of these weight saving achievements include vacuum bagged high-strength Baltek anti-fungal coring in the highly loaded bottom panels of the running surface. It should be noted that end grain balsa has tremendous shear strength and absorbs the trauma of impact. Our experience has been that in the event of an accidental grounding any damage is confined to the local area and does not compromise the surrounding core and laminates. This provides a superior measure of safety and reparability.
Similarly, low density Baltek balsa used in the hull sides, deck and superstructure, provides the requisite stiffness and strength with the benefit of reduced weight. Structural sandwich panels of lightweight Baltek foam are used for bulkheads in lieu of heavier plywood, and to produce the longitudinal and transverse frames employed in internal grid sections of the hull. By selecting this specific construction core material, the lamination schedules are optimized with higher strength bi- and triaxial knitted fabrics, which absorb less resin, producing a core laminate of unequalled physical properties. In all, by utilizing the knowledge gained in the building of the Viking 82 and 76 Convertibles, the Viking 70 will come in at a comparable weight of its predecessor, the Viking 68.
Through-hull areas including struts, shaft logs and water intakes penetrate solid fiberglass only. To eliminate corrosion potential, overboard discharge through-hull fittings are manufactured of fiberglass.
Mechanically, the new 70 Convertible is peerless with chilled water air conditioning, a Delta-T engineroom ventilation system and Viking’s proprietary VIPER (Viking Independent Programmable Electro-hydraulic Rudder) steering, which also is used aboard the Viking 82 and Viking 76 Convertibles. The VIPER system eliminates the tie-bar for independent rudder operation to optimize response and reduce rudder drag at all throttle settings for remarkable maneuverability. The 70 Convertible is available with MAN, Caterpillar and MTU power.
